Are Steroids Legal in the US? Real Steroids vs Legal Steroid Supplements
"Legal steroids" is one of the most searched phrases in fitness, and it causes a lot of confusion. This guide explains what US federal law says about anabolic steroids and how legal steroid supplements differ. It is general information, not legal advice.
Are anabolic steroids legal in the US?
Not without a prescription. Under the federal Controlled Substances Act, anabolic steroids are Schedule III controlled substances (21 U.S.C. § 812) [S2]. They were added to Schedule III by Pub. L. 101–647 (Nov. 29, 1990) [S2], and the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004 (Pub. L. 108-358, signed Oct 22, 2004) expanded the list [S3]. The term "anabolic steroid" is defined in federal law at 21 U.S.C. § 802(41) [S1]. Federal law makes it illegal to possess anabolic steroids without a valid prescription or to sell them outside legal channels (21 U.S.C. §§ 841, 844) [S4][S5].
What about Texas and other states?
Federal law applies in every state, and states can add their own penalties. If you have a state-specific question, check your state's controlled substances law or ask an attorney.
Are steroids allowed in bodybuilding?
Federal law doesn't change for competitors. Tested federations also ban anabolic steroids under their own rules; untested shows simply don't test, which doesn't make steroid possession legal.
What are legal steroid supplements?
Products like D-BOL®, Anodrol®, Winni-V® and Masterbolan® are dietary supplements. They are sold as dietary supplements, not prescription drugs or controlled substances, and are regulated as dietary supplements, which the FDA describes as products taken by mouth that contain dietary ingredients [S6]. Each product is a dietary supplement formulated to support specific training goals alongside diet and exercise.*
How to choose a legal supplement
- Read the full ingredient label and serving size.
- Avoid products that claim to contain steroids or "steroid-like" hormones; the FDA has warned that some bodybuilding products illegally contain them [S7].
- Buy from a seller with clear contact details and a returns policy.
